Current Events Compare and Contrast Activity Step 1: Select one news story – After reading, watching, and/or listening to the news, select ONE news story you find interesting. Step 2: Identify the original news agency source – Using the media bias charts below, locate the news agency you read, watched, or listened to as the original source of your news story. Step 3: Identify a news agency source on the opposite side of the media bias chart – If your source was on the left side of the chart, you will select a news agency from the right side of the chart. If your original source is on the right side of the chart, you will select a source from the left side of the chart. If the source of your original news story is from the center, you may pick from either the left or right. Whether you are choosing from the top, middle or bottom, you should choose two agencies that are at about the same latitude. The two different news sources must be from different sides of the media bias chart, (this cannot be the same AP story published by different sources). Step 4: Compare and Contrast the two news stories – A comparison shows how two or more things are similar. Contrast shows how they are different. Using a chart like the one below or a Venn Diagram document the information that is shared in both articles and the information that is included in only one side or the other. The ways the news stories are different go on the left or right of the chart/Venn diagram. The ways in which they are the same, information that both news stories mention should go in the middle.
