We will learn from a fascinating group of speakers conducting cutting-edge research. The course is intended to expose students to the latest research on a wide array of topics.Assessment:Quizzes (50%): Quizzes will cover the reading materials assigned for each week. They will take place on pre-assigned dates throughout the quarter. There will be in total 8 quizzes (with 10 questions each), and your lowest three quiz scores will be dropped. Each quiz will ask questions about the reading and the lecture for the week. Online quizzes must be taken within a 48-hour period and you get the whole weekend to do it. Beginning on the day listed in the syllabus. You have only 60 minutes to complete each quiz.Midterm/Paper 1: (25%): A 1200-1500-word paper that compares two of the course themes with a global studies approach and current events. Cite readings/lectures appropriately. You can cite things from outside course but focus on the class.Final/Paper 2: (25%): A 1500-2000-word paper that compares two of the course themes with a global studies approach and current events. Cite readings and lectures appropriately. One of the themes from after the midterm or second half of the quarter so you don’t end up writing a repeat of the midterm. Cite in any style you want.PARTICIPATION AND ATTENDANCE guidelines:Lectures will supplement the readings with weekly online quizzes. This class will be taught asynchronously online, meaning the normal course lectures will be posted to canvas and available for your to view. Online quizzes will be given via canvas during a 48-hour window beginning on Thursdays and must be completed within that window. No make-ups will be allowed.Extra credit:Every time you show up to a LIVE synchronous lecture or Q&A with a guest speaker and ask a question or say a good comment, you get one credit bonus point to be added as quiz points (per a quiz not overall quiz grade). Don’t waste this incredible opportunity to engage the speakers who are taking time out of their busy schedule to meet us.GRADE SCALE:A+ 96.6–100A 93.6 – 96.5A- 90 – 93.5B+ 86.5 – 89.B 83.6– 86.5B- 80 – 83.5C+ 76.6– 79.9C 73.6– 76.5C- 70 – 73.5D+ 66.6 – 69.9D 63.5– 66.5D- 60 – 63.5F 0 – 59.9ACADEMIC INTEGRITYAny work submitted for this course should be the student’s own work for this class. Please familiarize yourself with UCI policies on academic integrity: https://aisc.uci.edu/students/academic-integrity/definitions.php.Learning, research, and scholarship depend upon an environment of academic integrity and honesty. This environment can be maintained only when all participants recognize the importance of upholding the highest ethical standards. All student work, including quizzes, exams, reports, and papers must be the work of the individual receiving credit. Academic dishonesty includes, for example, cheating on examinations or any assignment, plagiarism of any kind (including improper citation of sources), having someone else take an examination or complete an assignment for you (or doing this for someone else), or any activity in which you represent someone else’s work as your own. Violations of academic integrity will be referred to the Office of Academic Integrity and Student Conduct. The impact on your grade will be determined by the individual instructor’s policies. Please familiarize yourself with UCI’s Academic IntegrityPolicy(https://aisc.uci.edu/policies/academic-integrity/index.php) and speak to your instructor if you have any questions about what is and is not allowed in this course.RESPECTPlease be considerate and respectful in discussion postings. I encourage active participation but ask you not to dominate the discussion. Our online discussions may touch on sensitive topics such as race, class, gender, sexuality, religion, inequality, immigration and politics. In order to have productive discussions about these pressing issues it is essential that everyone feel welcome to participate and to express opposing views. Learn to talk about ideas without attacking people. Avoid resorting to gross stereotypes. Racist, sexist and other hateful comments will not be tolerated in my class.VIRTUAL OFFICE HOURSBoth your instructor and your TAs will offer weekly office hours via zoom throughout the quarter. Office hours are a time that is set aside especially for students in an enrolled course. You should feel free to visit during office hours by simply clicking the link to the room. There is no need to set up an appointment in advance. During these virtual office hours, we can discuss any questions you might have about the course, questions about the readings, or just get to know each other a bit better. No appointment is needed. If it is during the allotted time, just click the link when you are ready and you will be in the chat room. If for any reason you are unavailable during the allotted times, feel free to write your instructor or TA an email requesting an alternative appointment time. You can attend any of the office hours that suit your schedule.Campus Support SERVICECenter for Excellence in Writing & Communicationhttp://www.writingcenter.uci.edu/Learning and Academic Resource Center (LARC)http://www.larc.uci.edu/students/Disability Services Center (DSC)UCI is committed to supporting and accommodating students with disabilities. It remains the copyrighted property of your instructor, and may not be distributed anywhere outside of class, on the internet, or to any other individuals who are not enrolled in this class.LECTURE OF RECOMMENDATION POLICYAs this is not a typical course, but more a public forum to bring in outside speakers, I will be not accepting any letters of recommendation requests from students in this course.LATENESS POLICYEvery quarter we get student requests, many of which are not acceptable like asking the TA to grade all missed assignments a day before the class ends. That is not only unreasonable but unfair to the TA, and essentially you asked for more time than your peers without pre-permission or reason, while putting undue burden on your teachers and graders. Please be responsible and professional. We are here to help you, but only if you let us help you. We are currently in a pandemic, and everyone is doing the best they can. So be in contact with us throughout the quarter. If something bad happens like a death in the family or accident or sickness, you must notify us immediately. We cannot figure out your situation on our own and will assign the appropriate. The TA is who you should talk to about the essays. Only email the professor about lectures, quizzes, and guest speakers etc. We appreciate your cooperation. Both your essays should write from a global and international studies perspective, even if you are not a major or minor. What does this mean? Be post-national in thinking, interdisciplinary in focus, and conceptual/critical in your approach. Your essays are NOT a compare and contrast papers, they are argumentative persuasive essays. You must make an original argument by juxtaposing two themes together. You don’t have to compare them equally; you can prioritize one and use the other theme, but the art and skill of writing requires deep analysis and argumentation logic that weaves things together into a neat holistic package.Global and international studies is big and appears random, but things are not random (or separate) but interconnected. Show us those interconnections! People think watching Netflix television shows is separate from white racial nationalism, but there is something to be said about those items in relation to one another.Your paper should try to link a few of the following things in some manner:Identities/Commodities/Structures/Institutions/Representations/Discourses/Systems/Ideas/Knowledge/Economy/Politics/Governance/History/Labor/Imaginaries/Experiences/Education etc….
