We will learn from a fascinating group of speakers conducting cutting-edge research. The course is intended to expose students to the latest research on a wide array of topics.Assessment:Quizzes (50%): Quizzes will cover the reading materials assigned for each week. They will take place on pre-assigned dates throughout the quarter. There will be in total 8 quizzes (with 10 questions each), and your lowest three quiz scores will be dropped. Each quiz will ask questions about the reading and the lecture for the week. Online quizzes must be taken within a 48-hour period and you get the whole weekend to do it. Beginning on the day listed in the syllabus. You have only 60 minutes to complete each quiz.Midterm/Paper 1: (25%): A 1200-1500-word paper that compares two of the course themes with a global studies approach and current events. Cite readings/lectures appropriately. You can cite things from outside course but focus on the class.Final/Paper 2: (25%): A 1500-2000-word paper that compares two of the course themes with a global studies approach and current events. Cite readings and lectures appropriately. One of the themes from after the midterm or second half of the quarter so you don’t end up writing a repeat of the midterm. Cite in any style you want.PARTICIPATION AND ATTENDANCE guidelines:Lectures will supplement the readings with weekly online quizzes.This class will be taught asynchronously online, meaning the normal course lectures will be posted to canvas and available for your to view. Online quizzes will be given via canvas during a 48-hour window beginning on Thursdays and must be completed within that window. No make-ups will be allowed.Extra credit:Every time you show up to a LIVE synchronous lecture or Q&A with a guest speaker and ask a question or say a good comment, you get one credit bonus point to be added as quiz points (per a quiz not overall quiz grade). You don’t have to compare them equally; you can prioritize one and use the other theme, but the art and skill of writing requires deep analysis and argumentation logic that weaves things together into a neat holistic package.Global and international studies is big and appears random, but things are not random (or separate) but interconnected. Show us those interconnections!
