The Effective Healthcare (EHC) Program of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) provides funding to individual researchers, research institutions, and academic institutions so they can collaborate with AHRQ to conduct comparative effectiveness and effectiveness research for clinicians and patients. 1 When it comes to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of clinical disorders as well as the enhancement of health care delivery, comparative effectiveness research (CER) examines the advantages, disadvantages, and efficacy of health interventions. CER’s goal is to support patients, consumers, providers, purchasers, and payers in making well-informed decisions that will enhance healthcare for both individuals and populations. 1
Making CER available to these decision-makers is one of EHC’s objectives. The significance of translating and distributing this knowledge is highlighted by the Institute of Medicine’s list of 100 priority topics for CER. 2 According to the first quartile of themes suggested for first attention, the particular topic (“compare the effectiveness of distribution and translation approaches to enable the use of CER by patients, physicians, payers, and others”) was included. Many people believe that improved CER communication and dissemination will lead to a greater utilization of this information.
These mandates are accompanied by the Ad Hoc Uncertainty Committee of the EHC Stakeholder Group’s interest in advancing efficient methods of informing end-users of uncertainty on health and healthcare evidence. The committee wants to know if methods for communicating uncertainty increase the likelihood that audiences will understand it and use it in their decision-making.
