MAJOR DETAILSLength: 7-9 pages of text, PLUS your Works Cited pageFont & Spacing: Use Times New Roman pt. 12, double space your summary and set yourmargins to one-inch all aroundCited Sources: At least six reputable sources, at least four of those should be scholarly.Other media is encouraged, but the sources must come from reliable sites.Style: This is a formal MLA paper.ASSIGNMENTThe purpose of the researched argument is to show your ability to present an educated, persuasive conversation surrounding a controversial issue. You must show your ability to discuss a controversial issue where you do not dismiss anything you might disagree with, but rather you will take your time addressing your understanding of the argument, and ultimately position your argument as the more reasonable option. You must convince your audience of you, your research, and your position. Start with formulating a thesis statement and several claims to back it up: This is how this problem should be solved, and here are a few reasons why this is the correct solution. A three-part thesis statement might be a good place to start. You can and should modify your thesis statement throughout this process.Your issue should be related toenvironmentalism/sustainability in some way, and it must be controversial–meaning, folks must disagree about how to solve the problem. You have learned several ways to persuade an audience and now it is time to demonstratethis in an academic writing setting. What methods of organization and appeals will youchoose to use to persuade your peers? Be sure to introduce your authors properly to build ethos.Your sources should reflect the communities that you are incorporating into your discussion. You need to acknowledge these communities in your discussion: talk about BOTH why youdo and do not agree with their positions. The essay portion is a formal MLA essay and should include a formal tone, diction, syntax, grammar, and structure. If you find yourself using “I” a lot, be sure to remove them beforesubmitting. Don’t use contractions. Include topic sentences and transitions.
