As you move forward in your academic and professional careers, you will encounter many different perspectives around topics you are engaged in. One of the hallmarks of an educated, open-minded person is the ability to recognize and appreciate the value of looking through these different “lenses” to arrive at informed views. In this course, you will begin to look through four of these lenses while you learn to find relevant information to support your views. To do this, you will complete three related assignments that will walk you through the process of finding information on a topic of interest to you and on viewing this topic through different lenses to get a larger picture of the topic and its impact on you. The first project is a lenses chart in which you will document what you learn about four liberal arts lenses: science, humanities, social science, and history. In the second project, you will complete a KWL chart to explore a topic of interest to you and to look at it through the four lenses. And in the last project, you will prepare a presentation on your topic that examines two of the four lenses and how looking through them together provides an even bigger picture of the topic. Project 1 will address the following course outcome:  Articulate the characteristics of various liberal arts lenses in determining their commonalities and differences Prompt To help guide your exploration of the four liberal arts lenses, you will complete a lenses chart (based on a template linked in Brightspace). You will use the information you gather in this chart on Projects 2 and 3 (the KWL chart and the presentation, respectively). Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed: I. Using your class resources, fill in the lenses chart with the characteristics of each of the four liberal arts lenses. A. Identify the key characteristics of each lens. Be sure to include relevant sub-points that help explain the characteristics. B. Provide examples of the types of questions experts and professionals in each of these disciplines must ask to do their work. C. Identify the types of evidence used when looking through each lens. You might want to think about the types of questions you identified above to help you get to the actual evidence that might support answers to them. D. Determine any commonalities and differences among the lenses based on the characteristics you have articulated. 1 Supporting Work and Resources Throughout Modules Two and Three, there are opportunities to work directly on different elements of the lenses chart. 1. In Module Two, you will complete the Social Science and Natural Science columns of the chart, noting the major characteristics of these particular lenses, the types of questions asked by experts in these disciplines, and the types of evidence used when looking through these lenses. You will then save your updated lenses chart so that you can continue to add to it in the following modules. 2. In Module Three, you will add at least one commonality and one difference you noticed between the lenses of social science and natural science to help you start to complete the Commonalities and Differences section of the chart. 3. In Module Three, you will also complete the History and Humanities columns of the chart, noting the major characteristics of these particular lenses, the types of questions asked by experts in these disciplines, and the types of evidence used when looking through these lenses. 4. In Module Three, you will also work to add any additional similarities and differences between the lenses that you discover before finalizing and submitting your lenses chart at the end of Module Three. The goal is to capture the main characteristics of each lens in the chart to help you see the similarities and differences between the lenses, and to also gain an understanding of how professionals in each field approach finding information.
