Welcome to NURS 6050-3 Policy & Advocacy for Population Health
Posted on: Tuesday, November 24, 2020 10:45:05 AM EST

Welcome to the course. We are in an interesting and exciting time in relation to policy and advocacy. My recommendation to you is that you read your syllabus completely and review each modules assignments and rubrics. It is your responsibility to submit your assignments and discussions on time. Please use the Writing Center if you feel you have issues with writing. Tools available to you are Grammarly and SafeAssign.

To Prepare:

Review the agenda priorities of the current/sitting U.S. president and the two previous presidential administrations.

Select an issue related to healthcare that was addressed by each of the last three U.S. presidential administrations.

Reflect on the focus of their respective agendas, including the allocation of financial resources for addressing the healthcare issue you selected.

Consider how you would communicate the importance of a healthcare issue to a legislator/policymaker or a member of their staff for inclusion on an agenda.

The Assignment: (1- to 2-page Comparison Grid, 1-Page Analysis, and 1-page Fact Sheet)

Identify the Population Health concern you selected. Opioid Addiction
Describe the Population Health concern you selected and the factors that contribute to it. The opioid epidemic is the health concern that I have selected because it affects families across all socioeconomic statuses. As nurses, we assess pain just as often as we take vital signs of our patients. Pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions are in place to bring forth comfort. However, pain management becomes challenging with the rise in chronic medical conditions and it is very easy to become dependent on narcotics. Drug dependency is a growing problem in the United States.
Administration (President Name) Donald Trump Barack Obama William Clinton
Describe the administrative agenda focus related to this issue for the current and two previous presidents. To build a stronger healthier drug-free society and reduce drug demand through education.

To expand access to treatment and prescription drug monitoring, safe disposal of unused drugs, and accelerate research related to pain, opioids, and their misuse.

Increase awareness and education to reduce stigma and curb addiction. Provide communities with the resources to tackle the epidemic. Foster meaningful partnerships with organizations for sustained involvement.
Identify the allocations of financial and other resources that the current and two previous presidents dedicated to this issue. The administration secured $6 billion in funding to support, prevent, and provide recovery activities. Funds allocated established help centers and institutions for individuals affected.

The administration allocated $1.1 billion for individuals wanting treatment so that they can get it anywhere. The administration allocated $12.2 billion in anti-drug efforts involving prevention, drug treatment, and enforcement.

Explain how each of the presidential administrations approached the issue. The Trump administration works hard to keep dangerous drugs out of the United States.

They also want to prosecute negligent practitioners and strengthen criminal penalties. Available to people struggling are resources to aid in recovery.

Clinicians will need to check a PDMP before prescribing an opioid. This will help to identify opioid use disorder as previously prescribed narcotics will be listed.

The administration will also allocate funds for evidence-based research to improve knowledge gaps in proper identification and treatment.

National prescription drug take back day also provides safe and effective ways of disposing of opioids.

The Clinton foundation partnered with Kaléo and Adapt Pharm to lower the cost of Narcan, an opioid effect reversing agent.

Community faith leaders were equipped with the resources and tools to serve the community as trusted leaders.

Partnership with Johns Hopkins Bloomberg and Public Health as well as Harvard Medical School used evidence-based research to implement interventions and education.

***Final Agenda Grid Comparison, Analysis, and Fact Sheet Required References****

Be sure to answer all the questions associated with the Agenda Comparison Grid for your final assignment:

-Identify which administrative agency would most likely be responsible for helping you address the -healthcare issue you selected.

-How does the healthcare issue get on the agenda and how does it stay there?

-Who was the entrepreneur/champion/sponsor of the healthcare issue you selected?

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.

Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.

Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.

Assignment: Agenda Comparison Grid

Assignment: Agenda Comparison Grid and Fact Sheet or Talking Points Brief

It may seem to you that healthcare has been a national topic of debate among political leaders for as long as you can remember.

Healthcare has been a policy item and a topic of debate not only in recent times but as far back as the administration of the second U.S. president, John Adams. In 1798, Adams signed legislation requiring that 20 cents per month of a sailor’s paycheck be set aside for covering their medical bills. This represented the first major piece of U.S. healthcare legislation, and the topic of healthcare has been woven into presidential agendas and political debate ever since.

As a healthcare professional, you may be called upon to provide expertise, guidance and/or opinions on healthcare matters as they are debated for inclusion into new policy. You may also be involved in planning new organizational policy and responses to changes in legislation. For all of these reasons you should be prepared to speak to national healthcare issues making the news.

it frequently refers to itself as a nonpartisan media operat ion. Descriptive words and phrases that predominate on th.is organization’swebsite include social activism, community  organizing,  justice,  equity ,  and  protect   the   disildvm1taged-typical  of a liberal or progressive ideo lo gy. Nevertheless, th e word “liberal” is never used on thissite.

Who is setti ng the agenda? Ron Pollack, founder of Families USA, has been most important in setting its  agenda.  He  stepped  down  from  his position as director /chief executive officer in March 2017. He is a well-known fire brand in Washington, D.C., who has successfully argued to the Supreme Court (he is a lawyer) for secure food aid for low -income Americans as well as for federal li tigation that resulted in the creation of the Women, Infants, and Children (W!C) program for malnourished mothers and infants. The board of directors for Families USA includes a Catholic nun with a history of activism for soc_ial justice, leaders from humanitarian foundations., a physician who has worked for a Democratic senator an d governor, a librarian who is a champion for Medicaid, a faculty memb er of Harvard Medical School, the director of a large labor union, and academics with backgrounds indicating liberal philosophies.

What are Families USA ‘s interests? The main inte rest is to secure affordable, quality health care for all people in the United States. 1be organization pro motes a patient – and communit y-centered health system.

When was the site updated? A blog provides analysis of current policy debates on healthcare finance; entries are no more than 3 days old. Other resources arc much older-avail.ableslide shows are l l months old.

Where does Families USA get its funding? ProPublica reports that Families USA’s 2014 990 tax return showed revenues of $7 million . Donors include the Kellogg Foundation, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, and others. As you can see, learning about Ron Pollock, finding the 990s, and discover ing which causes the Kellogg Foundation and other donors usually support takes some digging.

Summing it up, you shou ld never assume tha t any reference or source is un biased. Do not take content as factual until you have determined what the agenda and motivations of the au thors or publishers may be. This kind of critical thinking requires you to be a skeptical, soph is ticated user of data and information. This is not to say that you cannot use references from organizations such as Heritage Foundation or Fami lies USA; however, seeking balance in your understanding is important. Balance your knowledge by reading and exploring  a variety of points of view. As a starting point, TABLE 12-1 describes the five major political parties (and their general ideology) in the United States.

How to get the most out of your experience with Top Writers 4Me
One writer throughout the entire course
If you like the writer, you can hire them again. Just copy & paste their ID on the order form ("Preferred Writer's ID" field). This way, your vocabulary will be uniform, and the writer will be aware of your needs.
The same paper from different writers
You can order essay or any other work from two different writers to choose the best one or give another version to a friend. This can be done through the add-on "Same paper from another writer."
Copy of sources used by the writer
Our college essay writers work with ScienceDirect and other databases. They can send you articles or materials used in PDF or through screenshots. Just tick the "Copy of sources" field on the order form.
