Assessment and the Curriculum
Throughout this course we have studied theory and developmentally appropriate practices as part of our why behind curriculum decisions that we must make. In order to effectively determine what we need to do, we must gather information about our students or assess them. According to Gallo (2006), “Assessment of young children is most effective when it is curriculum-based—that is, aligned with learning standards as well as the goals and content of the curriculum and used to modify activities and practices to advance the development of each child” (as cited in Jaruszewicz, 2013, section 12.1). Now that you have a grasp on the connection between learning standards and creating goals or objectives, the final step is to assess if or how well children met those goals and from there plan to either modify or extend the lesson based on that information. As a professional, you play an important role in this process, which is the basis for this discussion. To prepare for your discussion, Please refer to the Week Five Guidance for further tips and examples that will support your success on this discussion. Read chapter 12: Evaluation and Assessment of Learning and Programs in your course text. Review the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment. Complete the ECD 315 Week 5: Objective & Assessment Alignment Self-Check interactivity In your initial post, Discuss your role as an early childhood professional in assessing children to determine the effectiveness curriculum. Explain, in your own words, what your ethical responsibilities are to children with regards to assessment (refer back to section 1 of the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment). Describe at least two assessment strategies that you can use with children in order to determine the effectiveness of the curriculum you have used (i.e. specific types of formal and/or informal assessments). Share the assessment section of your lesson from either your week two or week three assignment. Explain how you will revise this assessment section based on what you have learned this week
